Harvey was settled in 1837 by a group of hardworking labourers, carpenters, and school masters. Since then, the area has developed immensely. The introduction of lumber mills and the woolen mill provided many jobs and boosted the local economy. When the railway began to come through in 1869, tourism expanded. Hotels were needed, and businesses could expand with the support of supplies delivered by rail.
Today, Harvey continues to grow, as people are realizing the potential and beauty of the area. While passenger trains no longer pass through Harvey, many people travel here by car and come to Harvey to stay in lake residences during the summer. There are numerous stores, craft shop, restaurants, and local businesses operating in the area, and a local development committee is seeking to continue to develop the local economy without losing touch with the village's roots.
